Humus is an organic substance formed in soil by the decomposition of animal and plant remains. The humus content of aggregate is calculated from the colour formed when the sample is shaken in a sodium hydroxide solution.
The method is based on the principle that humus develops a dark colour when it reacts with NaOH. The intensity of the colour depends on the amount of humus present. If the solution is clear or only slightly coloured, the sample does not contain a quantity of humus that is considered significant. A strong colour reaction usually reflects a high humus content, but may be due to other factors. In that case, the method does not give a definitive conclusion.
